HISTORY OF FASHION

' The word FASHION comes from Latin facere', means "to make" ' - //Anonymous//

Its difficult to say exactly where fashion originated from, but we could date right back to around 100,000 years ago when we have recordings of the homo sapiens in the middle east. This species is which evolved into the modern day humans we are today. Fossils have been found with things such as necklaces from the 'homo sapien' time, was this the beginning of fashion? They took it on their own behalf to create their own individual fashion style using any possible materials, therefore you could argue that this was the creative starting line of fashion.

Around 1840 we had the beginning of trend following. Women would wear low and sloping shoulders on their garments with a very low pointed waist. Throughout the decade their beloved bell-shaped skirts grew larger with more loose fabric, the skirts began to look very 'full'.

As for their hair and accessories they even had a trend for when they where in the house. If you where planning on staying in that day then you would wear a linen cap with lace frills, but if you went outdoors you would change into your large bonnet. They always had their hair in a center parten   with ringlets of hair at the sides of the head or sometimes they styled it with loops of hair around their ears and pulled back into a bun. As an extra fashion accessory, paisley or crochet shawls where very fashionable as well as capes with large collars.

As for men in the 1840's

But it depends how you look at it. In the late 19th century there was a lot of strange objects brought together with no purpose intention of art. This could of been the beginning of fashion although it was unintentional it could of been a starting point for future inspiration.

The ultimate start of fashion came from royalty and began in Versailles, Paris. It began because of king Louie the fourth as people would wear jewels and spend a lot of money on clothing just to impress him. The first official designer was Charles-fredwick Worth, who was an English man, ??????

WHAT IS FASHION?

'Every season brings in it's newest creations secret signals of coming things. Whoever understands how to read them can know in advance not only the newest trends in art, but also about laws, wars and revolutions. Without a doubt this is fashion's greatest attraction.' - Walter Benjamin, Das Passagen-Werk

Fashion is something that changes with the seasons, something predicted years before it even enters our vision. Designers go crazy on all possible trend predicting materials to ensure their collections are going to be perfect for the time and season they release them. A lot of the time trends can also be influenced by culture or current events, Everything is pre-planned and created for the target market of the brand, we are studied down to every single last detail so the company knows they have shown the trend in the correct way for their market. Fashion is a lot of different things, its basically anything that changes with the time, it could range from hair styles to nail colours. If its popular in that era of time its 'in fashion', fashion is massively influenced by current events and culture. Catwalk fashion is when

STYLE is personality

STYLE is expression

STYLE is art

STYLE is different to fashion

Style is personality, expression, art; how someone shows the fashion trends in a way that suits them. You can tell a lot about a person by their style. You can link it to their music interest, what they may study, what their hobbies and interests may be and why they wear something in a certain way. It's not always correct, but its usually pretty accurate. Style is so creative because it's how somebody takes the 'fashion' updates and alters it to themselves, their comfort, their every day life. Someone who worked in an office everyday would create a different style to somebody who trained as a free runner most days. But they would both still put their personal touch towards it, these are the people we need to look up to not celebrities. Celebrities rarely have their own style, it's usually a 'stylist' who decides what the celeb should wear to suit their target market and designers use them to make the followers of this famous person purchase items which are similar/the same as the designers. The people we need to look up to to influence us, the people who actually create this art are the stylists for the celebrities, the celeb is basically just a money making mannequin.
